Is the Fed Done?

The Federal Reserve rose fed funds rate during its May meeting for the 16th consecutive time since the interest rate hike campaign that started in June 2004. Many hope that Fed Chairman, Mr. Bernanke, will end the rate hike campaign with the funds rate at 5 percent. However, this seems more like wishful thinking than anything else. The Fed engages in a delicate balancing act where excessive rates could cease economic growth, but lack of rate hikes could cause runaway inflation. The new Chairman has made his intentions clear that he will pursue an inflation targeting policy. This simply means that he will move rates according to economic data, particularly those that impact inflation. Sure core consumer price index (CPI) figures, which exclude food and energy, imply benign inflation; however, Mr. Bernanke fully understands the lag effects of economic data and interest rate impacts. That is probably why he stated that the Fed may “pause” in the future. However, this does not mean the end to more interest rate hikes. The fed funds futures price currently indicates an approximately 60 percent probability that the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) will pause for the June session. If, however, the Committee does pause in June, then another hike may come during the August meeting. Mr. Bernanke may hold the funds rate at 5.25 percent and see what the data tells him before he does anything that would choke the economy.

Sovran Self Storage Upgraded to "Buy": NEW YORK, June 15 (newratings.com) - Analysts at AG Edwards upgrade Sovran Self Storage ( SSS.NYS ) from "hold" to "buy." The target price is set to $51.  Full Article

Arizona Mini Storage Association Changes Name:  The Arizona Mini Storage Association announced that it has officially changed its name to the Arizona Self-Storage Association. According to Robert Schoff, AZSA president, "After ten years, our board of directors felt that the new name better identifies our association with the more accurate “self-storage” term rather than the outdated term 'mini storage.' New Jersey Faces Self-Storage Sales Tax:  Nothing has yet been decided about Gov. Jon S. Corzine's proposed budget with its tax increases and program cuts, but New Jerseyans should pay close attention in the coming weeks.  New taxes almost certainly will be approved. Relief for the state's highest-in-the-nation property taxes is at risk. Leafy state parks and sunny beaches might not be open for July Fourth. And the local hospital might not survive, depending which argument one accepts.  Is the sales tax increasing? Corzine's plan to increase the sales tax from 6 percent to 7 percent lacks the votes to clear the Legislature, but opponents haven't found an alternative other than calling for more spending cuts. A The sales tax could be expanded to golf and health clubs, landscaping, shipping and handling, self-storage, private investigators and downloaded music and videos. Some legislators suggest expanding it to accountants and attorneys. Full Article
