Concrete Cracks?
There is a Solution!

Concrete is used extensively in the construction industry.  It is versatile, relatively inexpensive, and can be cast in almost any form.  Unfortunately, even good concrete cracks as it gets old.  Concrete is a mixture of Portland cement, aggregate, and water.  After placement, the concrete cures through a hydration process and gains strength.  Most of the strength is gained quickly during the first several days, but it continues to gain strength for a long period of time, several years.  As concrete cures, it shrinks in volume.  The shrinkage places the concrete in tension and a fracture or crack occurs.  It is possible to include in the design special features to reduce the cracking such as extra re-bar, fibrous concrete, concrete add mixtures or thicker slabs, but the cost maybe prohibitive.  Most of the time, the designer, realizing that cracking will occur, elects to control the location of the cracks through the placement of control joints.  These grooves are cut or formed into the concrete slab at regular intervals.  A good example is a sidewalk; the formation of a crack will take the path of least resistance, thus along the groove.  In the real world, we know this does not always happen for a variety of reasons, maybe the joint was too shallow, the concrete mix was incorrectly, too much water, or the construction joints were in the wrong place.

Whatever caused the crack is history after it happens, what we want to know is what can we do now to repair the crack and provide us with a good surface.  There are several products available for concrete crack repair and each is probably adequate for their intended purpose.  The question is what would work best in the specific case.  Is it desired to just fill the crack, or should the filler have adequate strength to hold the crack together and halt or minimize crack propagation?  If the crack is on a control joint, it is necessary to fill it to obtain a relatively smooth floor.  I have had good luck with a good grade of caulking. A note of caution, if you plan to paint the floor, use caulking that can be painted, some silicon caulking resists paint.  If you need to stop a crack from spreading and repair it, you will need an epoxy-based product.  One of the best that I have found is from the Euclid Chemical Company (Euco #452 Epoxy System Gel).  This product was incorporated into some cracks at my facility four years ago, and they are still holding up very well.  To contact the Euclid Chemical Co. and discuss the specifics of your cracking problem, their phone number is 216-431-9222 – ask for technical support.
