How to Measure for Self Storage
Choosing the right big self storage unit comes down to knowing what you're working with. A little measuring upfront saves you from renting too small — or paying for more space than you need. Here's how to approach it:
Start with your largest items first.
- The biggest pieces in your haul — typically large furniture, appliances, or vehicles — will determine your minimum unit size. Measure each item's length, width, and height, and factor in that items will often be stacked or stored on their sides to maximize space.
Add a buffer.
- Once you've totaled up your square footage, build in some extra room. A unit that's packed wall-to-wall is difficult to navigate and makes retrieving items a hassle. A general rule of thumb: aim for about 20–30% more space than your measurements suggest you need.
Account for vertical space.
- Large self storage units typically offer 8–10 feet of ceiling height. Stacking boxes and using shelving units can effectively double your usable storage area — so don't just think in square feet, think in cubic feet too.
