If I could give this place 0 stars, I would. Do not rent with this facility unless you want frequent rate increases and your belongings ruined due to their negligence.
I rented a "climate controlled" storage unit in Englewood for the last 15 plus months to store furniture and other personal belongings you’d specifically want to protect from the elements you'd typically face in an outdoor, non-conditioned unit.
Unfortunately, after over a year, we discovered mildew damage to several items, including a sectional sofa, large area rug, mattress, television stand, and multiple plastic storage containers.
I filed a claim with the insurance company recommended by Extra Space Storage — only to have it denied. The reason? Mold and mildew are not covered by the policy and they don't cover issues resulting from humidity..
Here’s where things became even more frustrating:
Extra Space Storage has known HVAC issues at this location — issues that were reportedly scheduled to be fixed this fall. That’s far too late for the damage already done.
We spoke with several representatives at both the local and regional levels, including multiple attempts to reach District Manager Tiffany Thompson. After many unanswered calls, she finally responded. Initially, she stated there was nothing they could do, and claimed that “climate controlled” does not mean “humidity controlled.”
This is incredibly misleading — especially when customers are trusting that their valuables are being stored in a protected environment.
After pressing the issue, Ms. Thompson said she would instruct the site manager to open a new incident report for water damage, and requested I
file a new insurance claim. We paused and asked her to clarify: Was she suggesting we file a second claim under different circumstances — essentially misrepresenting the situation?
When we pointed out that doing so would be insurance fraud, she immediately backtracked, claiming that was not her intention. But if it wasn’t, the suggestion should never have been made in the first place.
Bottom line: If you're considering renting from Extra Space Storage, please read the fine print carefully — both in your lease agreement and the insurance policy. "Climate controlled" doesn’t mean what you might think, and in our case, it meant nothing at all.
We’ll be taking this story to the local news station next and BBB..
Photos of the facility, damaged items and the storage office. Should've been a red flag when we walked into the business and saw "Damp Rid" containers scattered throughout the office area.
The building was clean, The Manager was helpful, there was quite a bit of extra space in my storage. All around good experience. I stored all my antique troll dolls and beanie babies, I wouldnt leave them with anyone else. Zoe was a great help and made the experience a breeze.
Lovely, clean facility! Love that the lights pop on when you go down the aisle. The carts and loading dock are a huge convenience as well. Zoe was amazingly helpful and kind! Will use the facility again if I ever needed storage.
We just rented a locker at the Englewood location and Zoey was very helpful. She was courteous, professional, and went above and beyond to answer all of our questions. The location was very clean, we were greeted upon arrival, and the process was quick and easy.
Buyer beware here. Although the staff is nice, if you wanted this unit for the climate control, they do not give you what you’re paying for. We had several pieces of furniture ruined because the a/c units went out in the spring (April/May) of 2025, and no one was notified- we just had to find out when we went in to grab a few things and found mold growing on our belongings. The thermostats were set to 77, and reading 80 degrees. We also found quite a bit of mouse droppings and pee on our belongings. Our price per month in one year raised from about $145 to $289, and still not getting what we paid for. The insurance they try to sell you will not cover mold/mildew damage, so don’t bother with that either. Overall- if the staff wasn’t as nice as they are, I would give no stars.
